PREPARING FOR THE WORKSHOP
Please apply any pending updates to your computer. We recommend the Firefox web browser. Chrome is fine too, but we advise against it for ideological reasons.
You will have to register an account on our Git server: https://git.cyberia.club/user/sign_up
ā¹ļø NOTE: The required invite code is just the word stonks
(This is an anti-spam measure)
It should only take about a minute to register. Once you have an account, you can test it out by logging into the workshop web application at https://helloworld.cyberia.club/
Come up with an idea! What kind of web page do you want to create? It could be anything from abstract art to a fansite for your pet or a professional portfolio. If you want to go above and beyond, you could even try to create a simple game!
(OPTIONAL): If you want to use a lot of images or photos on your site, you may wish to install an image editing program on your computer if you don't have one already. We recommend Krita because it's free, powerful, and easy-ish to use. https://krita.org/en/
Preparing images (or anything else) ahead of time is a great way to ensure your project's smooth-sailing success.
You can do this prep stuff either on your own time, or at Layer Zero before workshop officially starts at 8pm.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
We will be writing HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) in order to create whatever we want on a web page and customize its appearance.
The workshop is affiliated with Cyberia Computer Club (https://cyberia.club/). It's created/taught primarily by Forest Johnson (https://sequentialread.com/) and will take place at Layer Zero, cyberia's fledgling hackerspace / lab. (https://layerze.ro/)
If you already know HTML and CSS and would like to attend the workshop as a mentor / teacher, that's fine!
Folks will be recommended to bring a laptop computer if possible, but it's ok if you can't.
This workshop aims to give you exposure to the same tools that professionals use to create websites, called IDEs (Integrated Development Environments).
However, you won't have to install any software on your computer, you will be given a web-based interface into the VSCode IDE, including a "sandbox" Linux environment where you are free to "get messy" and "make mistakes" š©āš¦°š¦š
If you wish, you'll also be able to save your work and/or publish it on the internet before the workshop is over!
This is the first time I'm doing this, so it's a bit of a trial run, but I would love to keep doing it and make it a regular thing, including expanding to more advanced topics like how to run a web server at home, how to make a dynamic web page with JavaScript, maybe even how to create a web application with user accounts, login sessions, the whole nine yards.
This workshop is free, however renting the space for Layer Zero is not free. Pay-what-you-want donations will be accepted via cash or card.
If none of these times work for you, or if you would rather attend a workshop on a different subject, Please leave a comment so we can try to accommodate!
